Book Worms

Attempting to make drawing up full and complete lists interesting can be a challenge. This idea is taken from books such as ‘A Cheese and Tomato Spider’ by Nick Sharratt. These types of books have illustrated pages cut in half. The different permutations of half pages produce amusing illustrations.

Here pupils have to make their own books from the worksheet, which is a quick and simple task. It is best to make the book with all the pages straight away and then examine just the required pages. Once the book is made it is ready to be analysed.

To make it more fun the list can be annotated with the animals name. This would be the answer to question 1.

Top Half   Bottom Half   Name
Dog   Dog   Dog
Dog   Duck   Dock
Duck   Dog   Dug
Duck   Duck   Duck

By making the list creation fun it encourages the pupils to search out all the possible permutations with the visual reward of the new animal and the fun element of making up a name. The numbers generated are easily recognisable to form a general equation.

The name creation for the people may need a little more ingenuity – Keith, Trisha and Sam could be Kim. Again the numbers generated are easily recognisable to form a general equation. An overall general equation can be checked against the book they create with 4 cuts. This needs to be done on A4 sized paper and can make a great wall display.
