Multiplication.
As with any of the basic number topics keeping them fresh and alive is very
important. The wider the variety of teaching styles and approaches pupils meet
the more enjoyable these topics become. Working on the principle that the best
way to distract from a repeated function is in the form of a game or puzzle,
here is a game and a puzzle!
Number Golf is a game using multiplication and subtraction/addition. Negative
numbers are introduced in the form of a ball shooting past a hole, but it then
becomes a positive when shooting back towards the hole. This means there are no
complex calculations involved. Pupils have a set of golf clubs (1, 2, 3 and 7),
they pre-select a club and roll the die. The product is the distance the ball
is hit. This is subtracted from the distance of the course and repeated until
the ball is sunk in the hole.
An important issue here is recording the shots in a table,
a). to get pupils into good record keeping habits,
b). to build up the complexity of the task.
For the better class you may want to create pars for each hole. Be warned this
is introducing more negative numbers in to the equation! Now pupils can achieve
a championship score for the course and it becomes a whole class competition,
rather than a head to head. You might let the pupil select which 4 clubs they
take on the course. To make it easier you may let the pupil decide which club
to play after the die has been rolled. They will even come up with their own
versions.
Multiple Maze (6, 7, 8 & 9). is a straight forward maze activity using
knowledge of the times tables. Each animal will follow multiples for either 6,
7, 8 or 9 to a toy, but which multiple and to which toy? Movement can be
vertical or horizontal, but not diagonal. There are plenty of wrong trails all
over the board. Pupils should colour in routes to remind themselves of the
correct answer.
